Halloween is one of the biggest celebrations in the United States, but also a marketing tool, as it is used to attract customers and drive sales. Stores around the world are filled with all type of decorations related to this holiday, varying from cute designs to really spooky ones, worthy of belonging to a horror movie set. Halloween is quite popular in Sweden as well. But how did it all begin? Let’s explore its spooky origins in Sweden and discover some costume and makeup ideas for your celebration!
History of Halloween in Sweden
While in the Anglo-Saxon world, this holiday of Celtic origin has a history of over 2,000 years, in Sweden, it “arrived” quite recently, between the late 1980s and early 1990s. Halloween is not an official holiday in Sweden, but it always falls near the Swedish red day “Alla helgons dag” (All Saints' Day), a day that commemorates loved ones who have passed away. Halloween is especially popular among the children and young people, as it is a great occasion to put on funny, scary or fancy costumes and have a party. Plenty of bars and clubs around Stockholm and Sweden have Halloween-themed parties, requiring the attendees to put on their best costumes and celebrate together. To mark Halloween this year, we have prepared for you a list of costume ideas, consisting of timeless to trendy characters; you will definitely find something that suits you!
What are the 2024 Halloween Trends?
Pop culture entered the Halloween costumes collection as early as the 1950s, usually relying on a popular movie that came out that year. Since the 1951’s Alice in Wonderland (which by the way, is still a popular choice these days), every year brought more interesting and creative icons on the scene of Halloween costumes, such as Princess Leia (19S77, Star Wars), Batman (1989), Freddy Krueger (1991), Spice Girls (1997), Harry Potter (2002), Harley Quinn (2015), the Nun (2018), Pennywise (2019) or Barbie and Wednesday Addams in 2023. Based on the previous years, we can predict that some of the most popular looks this year will include pop Star Sabrina Carpenter, anything related to Taylor Swift Era’s Tour as well as some characters from the hot-releases of 2024 in cinematography.
Beetlejuice: easily one of the most popular releases in the horror-movie world in 2024, we can bet we will spot at least one Beetlejuice at any given Halloween party this year. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a sequel to 1988 Beetlejuice. To dress yourself up as Beetlejuice, you will need a black and white striped suit and a green wig. The face makeup consists of white face and, let’s say, very intense black and purple smokey eyes.
Lydia Deetz: You can also explore a goth look and be Lydia Deetz. A red dress and a red veil, a half up half down bun and smokey red eyes makeup should definitely make you stand out.
Deadpool: 2024 brought to the Marvel world Deadpool and Wolverine, giving the fans 3 characters to dress up as, including Ladypool. The fun part is you will not even need a mask to create the look: it can all be done with makeup and/or face paint.
Inside out: If you and your friends need a group Halloween costumes idea, we might have a few ideas for you. We bet you never thought you could dress up as an “emotion” but Disney’s “Inside Out 2” brings that to life. The fun part is you can adapt the looks and get as creative as you can, as long as you stay in the color scheme of that emotion.
The Eras Tour: Given the Europe Tour she had this year, we can expect to see a lot of Taylor Swift-inspired looks. The looks can be as creative as you want: you can play with crystals, glitters or paint stars on your face: the sky’s the limit!
Corpse Bride: An epic classic Halloween look is the Corpse Bride! The look is as complex as it can be, from creating the sad-brows to the veil and floral crown, but equally beautiful and mesmerizing and you will definitely make an appearance.
Clown: Another classic costume idea that can be adapted is a clown, such as Pennywise. You can explore all the variations of clown makeup, from spooky to colorful and cheerful ones.
Mermaid: Let your inner child surface for this year’s Halloween and step into the Fantasy world. Create outstanding makeup inspired by the fantasy creatures. Our suggestion is Mermaid, due to the popularity of The Little Mermaid last year, as you can create the special effects of the scales on your face using eyeshadow and stencils.
